7 things to check before changing electricity supplier in Spain

A headline discount is only useful when you understand the price it applies to and the contract around it.

1. What the offer actually costs

Do not rely on ‘20% off’ without knowing the reference price, what is included, and the normal price after any promotion.

2. The energy-price structure

Check whether the energy price is fixed, varies by period, follows an index or uses another formula. Ask how and when it can change.

3. Contracted-power charges

Power is separate from energy consumption. Compare the power terms as well as the €/kWh figure.

4. Additional services

Check for maintenance, assistance, repair or other paid services. Confirm whether they are optional, their price, and how to cancel them.

5. Duration and renewal

Read the contract duration, renewal terms and any notice the supplier gives before a change. The 2026 rules require clear contract information, including duration and renewal conditions.

6. Permanence and early termination

Check the exact early-termination wording before you sign. For consumers covered by the relevant 2.0TD rule who do not have a fixed-price contract, the 2026 regulation states a right to end the supply contract and renewals without a termination penalty. Other contract situations need their own terms checked.

7. The switching process

The switch starts when the account holder formalises a new supply contract. Under the 2026 regulation, the consumer has a right to change supplier within a maximum of 10 working days from formalisation; this may be extended by up to five working days only where complex field work is needed.

The incoming supplier must obtain explicit consent. If you contract at a distance, consumer withdrawal rules may also apply; check the contract information and the current consumer-law guidance for your situation.
